. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Although Denny McLain failed for the fifth time in a bid for his first victory of the season, the Tigers defeated the White Sox. 4-3. Tom Timmerman, in relief, gained credit for the decision. The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning on a triple by Al Kaline and singles by Willie Horton, Bill Freehan and Don Wert. Freehan homered for another run in the third.

The White Sox, who had picked up an unearned run in the first, came back to tie the score with circuit clouts by Ed Herrmann in the fourth and Bill Melton in the eighth. Elliott Maddox walked in the Tigers' ninth and was forced on an attempted sacrifice by Cesar Gutierrez, but Gutierrez then stole second and scored the winning run on a single by Dick McAuliffe.
