Mel Stottlemyre returned to the winning column for the first time since June 21 by pitching the Yankees to a 7-1 victory over the Athletics. The Yankees decided the outcome with four runs in the fourth inning. Thurman Munson opened with a single and was out trying for third on a single by Bobby Murcer, but Murcer took second on the throw and scored on a single by Danny Cater.
