Sam McDowell, who struck out 14 and retired 24 straight batters at one stretch of his three-hit performance, pitched the Indians to a 3-1 victory over the Twins. After the Twins scored in the first inning on a double by Cesar Tovar and single by Tony Oliva, McDowell was invincible until Rich Reese beat out an infield hit with two away in the ninth.
