A homer by Tommie Aaron and the pitching of Don Cardwell featured the Braves' sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Cubs, 3-1 and 5-0, with the second game being stopped by rain with two out in the top half of the sixth inning. In the ninth inning of the opener, with the score tied, 1-1, Hank Aaron drew a two-out walk and Tommie Aaron, stepping into the slugging spotlight usually occupied by his more famous brother, smashed a homer to win the game for the Braves.

Cardwell, making his first appearance since being acquired from the Mets, allowed only three hits in the rain-shortened nightcap. The Braves scored two runs off Joe Decker in the first inning when Glenn Beckert, playing center field for the first time in his career, misjudged a line drive by Mike Lum, allowing the ball to fall for a double. Tony Gonzalez produced the Braves' other runs, hitting a homer with two men on base in the second. [The Sporting News]
