After sending only 27 men to bat in the first nine innings, the Reds exploded with a grand-slam homer by May in the 10th and beat the Cardinals, 4-0, to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader. Lee May also had a hand in the Reds' 4-3 victory in the opener, driving in a run with a double in the eighth inning when the Cincy crew tied the score at 3-3. Gary Nolan helped win his own game, rapping a single in the ninth and crossing the plate on singles by Pete Rose and Bobby Tolan. Chuck Taylor, who pitched the first nine innings of the nightcap for the Cardinals, allowed three hits, but double plays wiped out two runners and the third was thrown out trying to steal. Taylor was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth and Bob Chlupsa, taking over in the 10th, was the loser on May's slam. Rose singled, Tolan sacrificed, Tony Perez drew an intentional pass and Bernie Carbo singled to set the stage for the jackpot wallop. [The Sporting News] |
