Denny McLain was forced to leave the game when hit on the shin by a line drive in the eighth inning, but got credit for his first victory of the season as the Tigers defeated the Twins, 5-2.

McLain singled in the third inning and scored the Tigers' first run on a single by Dick McAuliffe and an error. The Tigers added their other tallies in the fifth on three singles, a sacrifice fly by Al Kaline and a homer by Willie Horton.
