Sam McDowell went over the 200 mark in strikeouts for the sixth straight season and gained his seventh straight victory and 15th of the year as the Indians defeated the White Sox, 5-2. McDowell fanned nine, bringing his total to 206.

Eddie Leon started the Indians' scoring with a homer in the third, but the White Sox went ahead with a two-run single by Ken Berry in the fourth. Jack Heidemann singled in the fifth and Vada Pinson homered to put McDowell ahead to stay. [The Sporting News]
