Milt Pappas became the first pitcher to shut out the Reds this season when the righthander yielded only four hits as the Cubs gained a 1-0 victory. An unearned run pinned the loss on Clay Carroll, who took the mound in relief of Jim McGlothlin in the eighth inning. Carroll started off by walking both Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert. Billy Williams grounded to Helms, whose throw to Woody Woodward forced Beckert, but Woodward's wild relay to first base allowed Kessinger to score. [The Sporting News]
