Circuit clouts by Don Mincher and Reggie Jackson tied the score in the fourth, Mincher's blow coming with Sal Bando on base, but the Red Sox regained the lead with a swat by Smith in the fifth. The Athletics bounced back in their half when Felipe Alou singled and Bando homered. The last run, in the eighth, counted on a walk to Bando, a sacrifice and a throwing error by Carl Yastrzemski.
