The clutch relief pitching of Dave Giusti, who took over with the bases loaded and none out in the ninth inning, enabled the Pirates to defeat the Reds, 4-3. Bill Mazeroski homered with two men on base in the second and the Pirates added a run on doubles by Richie Hebner and Al Oliver in the fifth to hold a 4-2 lead going into the Reds' final turn at bat.

Jimmy Stewart touched off the Cincy threat with a single and, after Joe Gibbon replaced Bruce Dal Canton, singles by Bobby Tolan and Pete Rose loaded the bases. Giusti gave up a sacrifice fly by Tony Perez, passed Johnny Bench intentionally, struck out Bernie Carbo and retired Lee May on a fly to save the game. [The Sporting News]
