Donn Clendenon set a Mets' club record by driving in seven runs to highlight a 12-2 rout of the Giants. The former mark of six RBIs in a game was set by Frank Thomas in 1962 and tied by Jerry Buchek in 1967. Clendenon batted in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, homered with two men on base in the third and then connected again with two aboard in the fourth.

The Mets' 17-hit attack also included a solo swat by Ron Swoboda for the last run in the eighth. Jim McAndrew pitched a five-hitter for the Mets, but his bid for a shutout was spoiled in the sixth when Mike Davison and Bobby Bonds walked and Ron Hunt drove them home with a double.
