Taking advantage of an error by Lou Piniella with two out in the fifth inning, the Tigers scored six unearned runs and defeated the Royals, 10-3. When Piniella dropped a fly by Dick McAuliffe, two runs scored. Bill Freehan followed with a triple for two more and Don Wert marked his 32nd birthday with a homer to cap the gift stanza.
