Mudcat Grant, who gained his 18th save of season, preserved a victory for Catfish Hunter for eighth time as the Athletics nipped the Red Sox, 2-1. Bert Campaneris singled in the first inning, stole two bases and scored the A's initial run on a sacrifice fly by Felipe Alou. Hunter doubled in the third and crossed the plate on a double by Rick Monday to plate what proved to be the deciding run for his 15th victory.

The Red Sox notched their tally in the seventh on a walk and singles by Mike Andrews and Reggie Smith. The loss went to Cal Koonce, who made his first start since September 3, 1968. [The Sporting News]
