With Jim Palmer pitching a six-hitter to gain a 9-1 victory, the Orioles defeated the Royals for the 22nd straight time to set a major league record. The Orioles' mastery extended over two seasons. It began after the Royals won the first meeting of the two clubs, 4-2, May 9, 1969. The former record of 21 consecutive victories by one club over another was established by Boston against Philadelphia in 1883-84 and was tied by the Yankees against the St. Louis Browns in 1927.
