After tying score three different times, the Reds finally defeated the Cubs, 4-3, on a two-out single by Bobby Tolan in the 11th inning. Lee May homered in the seventh to forge a 1-1 deadlock. The Cubs went ahead again in the eighth when Glenn Beckert tripled and Ron Santo singled, but the Reds knotted the count in the ninth on a grounder by Ty Cline with the bases loaded.
