. . . where the 1970s live forever!
The Padres knocked the Mets out of first place in the Eastern division behind the Pirates by sweeping a doubleheader, 3-0 and 4-2. Danny Coombs and Tom Dukes combined to pitch a shutout, holding the Mets to four hits, all off Coombs in the first 6 2/3 innings. Dukes retired the last seven straight batters. The Padres were held to one hit by Jim McAndrew until breaking through for two runs in the seventh. Cito Gaston walked, stole second and scored on a single by Ollie Brown. After another single by Ramon Webster, Ed Spiezio hit a sacrifice fly. Singles by Gaston and Brown, around a sacrifice, added a run in the ninth.

In the nightcap, the Mets scored on homers by Donn Clendenon in the sixth inning and Ron Swoboda in the seventh. Nate Colbert shattered the 2-2 tie with a circuit clout in the eighth and, one out later, Spiezio also hit a homer to clinch the Padres' sweep. [The Sporting News]
