Bob Gibson batted in what proved to be the winning run with a single in the ninth inning while the pitching the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Astros. The Cardinals bunched four hits for two runs in the fourth. After Johnny Edwards homered for the Astros in the eighth, Mike Shannon singled in the ninth, Dal Maxvill walked and Gibson looped a single to right field. The Astros threatened in the ninth with singles by Jesus Alou and Joe Morgan, but scored only one run when Jim Wynn grounded into a double play. [The Sporting News]
