Rich Reese batted the Twins to a 2-1 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Brewers came back to win the nightcap, 4-2, with the aid of a two-run homer by Bob Burda. In the first game, Jim Perry, who was taken out in the ninth inning after suffering a pulled groin muscle, gained his 16th victory. Tom Hall finished. The Brewers scored their run off Perry in the fifth when Roberto Pena singled, stole second and Jerry McNertney singled. Reese drove in the tying run with a double in the sixth and plated the winning marker with a single in the eighth. Luis Tiant, making his first appearance for the Twins since breaking his shoulder May 28, was the loser of the second game, although allowing only one run on two walks and a single by Dave May in the first inning. Burda hit his homer off reliever Stan Williams in the sixth with Mike Hegan on base via a walk. Singles by Pena, Phil Roof and Lew Krausse added a run off Dick Woodson in the ninth. The Twins averted a shutout by scoring twice in their half of the ninth. [The Sporting News] |
