Danny Frisella, making his first start since July 14, 1968, gained the victory when the Mets used three unearned runs to defeat the Cardinals, 5-3. Steve Carlton, who started for the Redbirds, beat himself. Tommie Agee opened the game by drawing a walk and, with one out, Cleon Jones bounced to Carlton, who threw wildly to second base, both runners advancing. Donn Clendenon drove them home with a single. After stealing second, Clendenon counted on a two-out single by Joe Foy. Singles by Bud Harrelson and Jones, an error by Dick Allen and a grounder by Foy added two Met runs in the third.
