Dean Chance posted his first shutout in an Indians' uniform, the 33rd of his career, to win the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-0, before Jim Hardin celebrated his 27th birthday by pitching the Orioles to a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. Chance allowed four hits in stopping the Orioles on their five-game winning streak. Tony Horton decided the outcome by smashing a homer off Mike Cuellar with two men on base in the first inning. Graig Nettles added a circuit clout in the sixth. Hardin helped himself to the nightcap victory with a two-run triple in the second inning and picked up credit for another RBI by drawing a pass with the bases loaded in the eighth.
