The Royals, after being held scoreless on two hits off Diego Segui in the first six innings, exploded for five runs in the seventh, including homers by Amos Otis and Bob Oliver, to defeat the Athletics, 5-3. The A's runs counted in the second, two being forced home on passes with the bases loaded. Otis broke Segul's mastery with his homer to lead off the seventh. Lou Piniella singled and Oliver followed with a homer to kayo Segui.

The A's called on three relievers before the side was retired, but not until the Royals added their other runs. A single by Paul Schaal, pass to Jim Campanis and single by Pat Kelly produced the tie-breaking tally. Then, after Cookie Rojas singled to load the bases, Otis, up for a second time, walked to force in an extra run. [The Sporting News]
