After breaking a tie on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, the Yankees added three runs in the eighth and defeated the Tigers, 5-1. The Yankees loaded the bases in the sixth, but Bobby Murcer grounded to Al Kaline, who stepped on first base and threw home for a double play. However, Danny Cater reached third on the play and scored on a wild pitch by Les Cain.
