. . . where the 1970s live forever!
With Tom Seaver posting his 17th victory, the Mets beat the Pirates, 10-2, for a split of the four-game series to leave the clubs where they started with the Pirates having a 2½-game lead over the Mets in the East division race. Seaver got off to a shaky start, giving up the Pirates' runs on two walks, a double by Al Oliver and an infield out, but the Mets' ace allowed only five singles the rest of the way.

The Mets charged back with five runs in the second. Cleon Jones doubled and, with one out, Wayne Garrett walked and Jerry Grote singled to load the bases. Seaver grounded to Al Oliver, who had a chance to start an inning-ending double play, but the first baseman threw wildly to second, two runs scoring. Another counted on a single by Tommie Agee. After a hit by Bud Harrelson reloaded the sacks, a walk to Ken Boswell and sacrifice fly by Donn Clendenon produced two more runs. Agee tripled to plate two runs in the third. Another pair counted in the fourth on four walks and a sacrifice fly by Grote before Clendenon wound up the scoring with a homer in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
