Pitching a three-hitter, Sam McDowell gained his 17th victory when the Indians defeated the Athletics, 4-3. Vada Pinson led off the game with a homer for the Indians, but the A's loaded bases with the aid of an error in the third inning and scored three unearned runs on a double by Tommy Davis.

The Indians came back with three in the fifth. Jack Heidemann doubled and McDowell walked. After Pinson forced McDowell, Heidemann scored on a single by Graig Nettles. Pinson crossed the plate on a wild pitch and the winning run followed when Roy Foster singled. [The Sporting News]
