With help from Hoyt Wilhelm in the ninth inning, George Stone gained his first victory since July 6 when the Braves defeated the Expos, 4-1. Tony Gonzalez batted in the Braves' first two runs with a double in the third inning. Stone, who allowed only three hits, gave up a homer by Bob Bailey in the fourth, but the Braves came back with a pair in the sixth when Gonzalez singled and Rico Carty hit for the circuit. Stone was removed after a single by Gary Sutherland and a one-out pass to Rust Staub in the ninth. Wilhelm got Bailey to ground into a forceout and then struck out Coco Laboy to end the game.
