Backed by three homers, Jim Merritt notched his 17th victory of the season as the Reds beat the Mets, 6-1. Merritt, who gave up only five hits and struck out 13, yielded the Mets' runs in the first inning on triples by Cleon Jones and Donn Clendenon. The Reds powered their way into the lead in the fourth when Tony Perez walked and Johnny Bench and Lee May hit back-to-back homers. Perez added a homer in the sixth and drove in the last two runs with a double in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
