The N. L.'s record for most grand slams in one season, 40, set in 1969, was tied when Hal King homered with the bases loaded to highlight the Braves' 10-2 victory over the Mets in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader. The Mets came back to win the nightcap, 4-2. The Braves had a slim 3-2 lead in the lidlifter before King broke the tight game apart with his jackpot wallop off Tug McGraw in the seventh inning. Orlando Cepeda added a three-run homer in the eighth. In the nightcap, the Mets erupted for all their runs in the seventh, starting with a circuit clout by Duffy Dyer. Dave Marshall and Tommie Agee then singled and Wayne Garrett homered for the winning blow. [The Sporting News] |
