The Phillies scored two runs in the fourth inning on an error by Johnny Bench and added three runs in the fifth to defeat the Reds, 5-4. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Bench tried to pick Johnny Briggs off third, but his throw struck the runner and bounced into the Reds' dugout.

Bernie Carbo homered after a single by Bench in the Reds' half, but Mel Behney, pitching in relief, was the loser in the next stanza in his first major league appearance. A Reds' rally in the ninth was cut off when Joe Hoerner induced Carbo to ground into a double play. [The Sporting News]
