Splitting a pair of overtime games, the Cardinals won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1, in 13 innings and the Giants took the nightcap, 5-4, in 10 innings. The Cardinals' winning run in the first game scored on a single by Julian Javier, wild pitch by Don McMahon and wild throw by Dick Dietz on a bunt by Joe Hague.

McMahon appeared again in relief in the second game and was the winner when the Giants scored in the 10th on a single by Frank Johnson and double by Bobby Bonds. The Cardinals had a two-run homer by Lou Brock. Ken Henderson hit one for the Giants in the seventh inning, but the Cardinals went ahead, 4-2, in their half with a walk and a triple by Jose Cardenal.
