The Yankees rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to edge the Royals, 5-4. Roy White hit his 18th homer of the season in the first, a career high for the Yankee outfielder. The Royals, however, were leading, 4-2, when the Yankees' rally started with singles by Thurman Munson and White. After a sacrifice by Bobby Murcer, Danny Cater singled to tie the score. Cater took second on the throw to the plate and counted the winning run on a single by pinch-hitter Jake Gibbs. [The Sporting News]
