The Twins suffered their eighth and ninth consecutive defeats, losing separate-admission, day and night games with the Red Sox, 5-3 and 11-7. In the sunshine contest, Rico Petrocelli homered for the Red Sox in the second inning, but Tony Oliva batted in two runs with a double and a single to enable the Twins to take a 3-2 lead. The Red Sox took command with two runs in the sixth. Reggie Smith singled, Carl Yastrzemski was safe on an error and Petrocelli singled to tie the score. Billy Conigliaro followed with a single, plating Yastrzemski with the leading run.

The Red Sox started the night game with homers by Smith and Yastrzemski, but Oliva and Brant Alyea each homered for the Twins and combined to drive in five runs as the Twins moved ahead, 7-3. The Red Sox began their comeback in the fifth when Billy Conigliaro tripled and George Thomas homered. The Red Sox wiped out that deficit and took the lead with four runs in the seventh and clinched the decision with two more in the eighth on doubles by Yastrzemski and Thomas and a single by John Kennedy.
