. . . where the 1970s live forever!
A passed ball by Jerry Grote on a third strike cross-up by Tom Seaver and wild throw by the catcher after retrieving the ball enabled the Braves to score two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Mets, 3-2. Seaver, who was the loser, gave up the Braves' initial run in the second inning on singles by Orlando Cepeda, Rico Carty and Clete Boyer, but the Mets' ace singled in the sixth and scored on a two-out homer by Donn Clendenon. In the ninth, the Braves loaded the bases on a single by Tony Gonzalez, infield hit by Carty and pass to Hank Aaron. Bob Tillman then struck out, but Seaver, on a curveball sign, fired a fastball instead. The pitch got past Grote as Gonzalez scored. Grote, going back for the ball, spun and threw wildly to Seaver, who was covering the plate, and Carty raced home from second with the winning run. [The Sporting News]
