Mel Stottlemyre tripled with two men on base in the seventh inning as the Yankees rallied for three runs to defeat the Twins, 4-3. A run-scoring double by Bobby Murcer was the Yankees' only hit off Bill Zepp until the seventh when John Ellis doubled. Jim Lyttle also doubled, but Ellis, fearing a possible catch, held up and was able to advance only to third. An infield out by Jake Gibbs scored Ellis. Jerry Kenney grounded to Leo Cardenas and Lyttle was caught off third, but George Mitterwald botched up the rundown play and Lyttle slid back safely.

Calling off a pinch-hitter for Stottlemyre, the Yankees let him bat and the pitcher responded with his triple to deep center field. Cardenas batted in the Twins' first two runs with a sacrifice fly and a homer. Mitterwald accounted for the final tally with a circuit clout. [The Sporting News]
