Bob Oliver looped a single over the infield to score Amos Otis in the 12th inning and give the Royals a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox. Reggie Smith homered for the Red Sox run in the fourth and the Royals tied the score in their half on a walk to Otis, an infield out and a single by Ed Kirkpatrick.

In the 12th, Cookie Rojas and Otis drew passes from Ken Brett and Lou Piniella bunted safely to load the bases. Sparky Lyle relieved and got Kirkpatrick to ground into a forceout at the plate, but after Gary Wagner took over as the third Red Sox pitcher of the inning, Oliver hit his single over the drawn-in infield.
