A grand-slam homer by Jay Johnstone climaxed a six-run rally in the ninth inning and gave the Angels a 10-6 victory to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Tigers. The Angels won the first game, 6-4, in 12 innings. The Tigers, who had homers by Dalton Jones and Norm Cash, took a 4-0 lead in the opener before the Angels picked up two runs in the seventh and tied the score in the ninth. After one run scored when Joe Azcue grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, the tying tally followed on a passed ball by Bill Freehan. In the 12th, a pass to Johnstone, double by Jim Spencer and sacrifice fly by Jim Fregosi broke the deadlock. A double by Alex Johnson added an extra marker.

Roger Repoz and Johnson homered for the Angels in the nightcap, but Kevin Collins hit for the circuit with two men on base in the eighth to send the Tigers ahead, 6-4. A single by Azcue, double by Sandy Alomar and single by Fregosi tied the score as the Angels rallied in the ninth.
