The Phillies, who scored twice in the first seven innings although held to only three hits by Tony Cloninger, rose up against Wayne Granger for another run in the 12th to beat the Reds, 3-2. After the Reds got off to a 2-0 lead, the Phillies picked up a run in the second on a walk and a double by Don Money. Another pass to Johnny Briggs, a sacrifice by Money and single by Ron Stone tied the game in the seventh.

Rick Joseph, batting for winning pitcher Dick Selma, singled in the 12th and gave way on the paths to Denny Doyle, who completed the circuit on the bases on a sacrifice by Larry Bowa and a single by Tony Taylor. [The Sporting News]
