Although tagged for 10 hits, Dave McNally became the first 20-game winner in the major leagues this season when the lefthander pitched the Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the Athletics. McNally, who reached the charmed circle for the third straight year, gave up the A's run in the third inning on singles by Bert Campaneris and Felipe Alou around a stolen base.

The Orioles knocked out Diego Segui in their half of the third, scoring four runs. A single by Don Buford, triple by Paul Blair and single by Boog Powell produced the first two tallies. After Frank Robinson singled, Powell stopping at second, Andy Etchebarren beat out a grounder to Don Mincher and when the first baseman threw wildly, Powell and Robinson crossed the plate.
