The Expos showed no respect for 20-game winner Jim Merritt and defeated the Reds, 5-1, behind the six-hit flinging of Steve Renko. Rusty Staub tagged Merritt for a homer in the first inning. Ater Lee May provided the Reds' run with a circuit clout in the second, the Expos broke away with three in the fourth on a single by Adolfo Phillips, an error, a double by John Bateman and a single by John Boccabella. Phillips walked in the fifth and counted the last run on a double by Bob Bailey. [The Sporting News]
