Wayne Garrett had the second four-hit game of his major league career and scored the winning run in the 12th inning as the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 4-3. After a homer by Leron Lee and another run on singles by Joe Hague, Joe Torre and Ted Simmons gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead, the Mets tied the score in the ninth when Cleon Jones doubled and Donn Clendenon singled.

A single by Jerry Grote, pass to Joe Foy and single by Ed Kranepool for his first hit in 22 appearances as a pinch-hitter, sent the Mets ahead in the 11th, but the Cardinals pulled even in their half with singles by Jim Beauchamp, Torre and Simmons. Garrett singled in the 12th, stole second, continued to third when Milt Ramirez failed to hold the throw by Simmons and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jones.
