Sparked by Matty Alou, who hit his first homer since June 4, 1969, the Pirates beat the Expos, 8-4, to snap a six-game losing streak. Alou's blow with Bob Veale on base broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. After two out, Al Oliver singled and Willie Stargell also hit for the circuit.

Veale, who had been plagued by an ailing shoulder, made his first appearance since August 21. The lefthander gave up a run in the first, but did not yield a hit until Bob Bailey homered in the seventh. The Expos went on to add two more runs, bringing John Lamb to the relief of Veale.
