The Giants were able to extend their winning streak to five games when John Stephenson drove in two runs with a pinch-double in the eighth inning to beat the Reds, 5-3. The Giants took a 2-1 lead on a double by Jim Ray Hart in the fourth and added a run on a homer by Bobby Bonds in the seventh, but the Reds tied the score in their half of the seventh on a single by Pete Rose, double by Bobby Tolan and single by Tony Perez. In the eighth, a double by Tito Fuentes and an intentional pass to Bonds preceded Stephenson's two-out double to enable Gaylord Perry to post his 17th victory. [The Sporting News]
