With two out in the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Frank Fernandez came through with a three-run homer to bring the Athletics a 4-3 victory over the White Sox. Bob Spence gave the White Sox their first two runs with a circuit clout in second. Gene Tenace homered for the A's in the seventh, but the White Sox added a run in the ninth on doubles by Carlos May and Bill Melton. In the A's ninth, with one out, Sal Bando singled and, after Tenace flied out, pinch-hitter Dave Duncan also singled before Fernandez delivered his dramatic homer. [The Sporting News]
