. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Jim Hickman batted in four runs and Fergie Jenkins pitched a four-hitter as the Cubs defeated the Phillies. 7-2, but a familiar name was missing from the Chicago lineup. Billy Williams was benched, ending his string of appearances in 1,117 consecutive games.

Singles by Glenn Beckert, Joe Pepitone and Hickman started the Cubs' scoring in first the inning. Don Kessinger doubled in the third and counted on a single by Beckert. Pepitone bunted and was safe along with Beckert on a late throw on a fielder's choice. Hickman then smashed a homer. Pepitone batted in the Cubs' last two tallies with a triple in the fourth. Larry Hisle and Tim McCarver hit back-to-back homers in the fifth to account for the Phillies' runs. [The Sporting News]
