After seven unsuccessful attempts, Catfish Hunter gained his 16th victory and first since July 30 when the Athletics defeated the Royals, 5-0. The shutout was the first of the season for Hunter and the complete game was his first since June 12. Don Mincher hit a two-run homer and Gene Tenace added a bases-empty blast in the A's attack.
