The Cubs moved into a virtual tie with the Pirates for first place in the East division, trailing by only four-tenths of one percentage point, as the result of a 7-4 victory over the Mets, who fell 1½ games off the pace. The Cubs built up a 3-0 lead, but the Mets tied the score in the sixth when Wayne Garrett walked, Cleon Jones singled and Art Shamsky homered.

Jim Hickman strolled for the Cubs in the seventh and Joe Pepitone singled. After a sacrifice by Ron Santo, Johnny Callison drew an intentional pass to load the bases. Randy Hundley promptly doubled, driving in two runs, and Paul Popovich followed with a sacrifice fly for another counter.
