Mike Corkins smashed a grand slam for his first major league homer and allowed only five hits in seven innings of pitching as the Padres pounded the Reds, 15-2. Corkins' clout in the fourth inning kayoed Jim Merritt, the Reds' 20-game winner. Cito Gaston and Nate Colbert also homered in the 18-hit attack.

Jim Maloney, making his first appearance for the Reds since rupturing his Achilles tendon April 16 and pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief, was racked for five runs, two coming on Gaston's round-tripper. Corkins gave up the Reds' runs on a homer by Bobby Tolan in the fifth. Paul Doyle pitched the last two innings for the Padres and was credited with a cheap save. [The Sporting News]
