Led by Jim Northrup, who batted in four runs, the Tigers defeated the Orioles, 5-2, to turn back Jim Palmer's bid for his 20th victory. Mickey Stanley and Al Kaline singled in the first inning and both scored on a double by Northrup, who added his two other RBIs with a bases-loaded single in the seventh.
