Joe Lahoud connected for the Red Sox in the first inning, but a double by Ken Harrelson, pass to Roy Foster and homer by Buddy Bradford produced the Indians' runs in the second.

The Red Sox tied the score in the fourth when Tony Conigliaro was hit by a pitch and Rico Petrocelli hit a homer. Brett broke the tie with his round-tripper in the eighth off Steve Hargan, whose 28th birthday was spoiled by the loss, the first for the righthander after winning seven straight games since being recalled from the minors on July 16.
