The Cubs backed Bill Hands' pitching with a 15-hit attack and defeated the Pirates, 10-3. The setback trimmed the Pirates' East division lead to one-half game over the Mets and one game over the Cubs. The Cubs bunched five singles for two runs in the second inning and added two more in the third on a homer by Billy Williams and singles by Jim Hickman and Ron Santo around a passed ball and an infield out. Randy Hundley batted in a run with a single in the seventh and the Cubs then iced the verdict with five runs in the eighth, featuring a triple by Joe Pepitone with two men on base.
