. . . where the 1970s live forever!
The Mets erupted for six runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Expos, 10-5, to pull within one-half game of the Pirates in the tight East division race. The leaders lost to the Cubs. The Mets jumped off to a 4-0 lead before the Expos rallied for two runs in the fourth. Gary Gentry was hit on the hand by a batted ball and was forced to leave the mound. Tug McGraw took over and helped gain the victory by batting in three runs in the eighth.

Wayne Garrett started the stanza with a single, Cleon Jones doubled and, after an intentional pass to Art Shamsky, Ken Boswell cleared the sacks with a double. Passes to Jerry Grote and Bud Harrelson reloaded the bases. McGraw then hit safely to right field and tripped over first base, forcing him to stop with a single, but all three runners scored. Ron Herbel replaced McGraw in the ninth after Bob Bailey hit a three-run homer for the Expos. [The Sporting News]
